Steel House Project / Woodwick Farm
CES Completed – August 2012
We purchased the agricultural land of 57 acres in Oct 2006 with the plan of starting a new equestrian centre from scratch. We employed planning consultants to help us with the planning process of getting the equestrian centre and in August 2007 got the planning for american barn stabling, tack room and feedstore, an agricultural building for hay/straw storage and workshop and a 35m by 65m sandschool. We set about building this in December 2007 and we were able to begin trading in August 2008 albeit slow at start whilst we were completing the build. In January 2008 we got temporary planning permission to live on site in mobile park home. This was granted for 3 years for us to prove to the council that we were a viable business. This we have proved and in June 2011 we got granted full planning permission for a detached house.
This house was designed for us by Eugene Sellors of Slurp Design to sit comfortably in the natural lie of the land and make advantage of the views both for security and pleasure. Eugene incorporated in his design a cantilevered balcony surrounding the house at first floor level around the main living area of the house it being a reverse living house. Upon discussions with the structural engineer and architect when doing the drawings for building control it was decided that the best way to construct the house with the cantilevered balcony would be by steel frame and blockwork.
Once the drawings were done and approved we set about getting the quotes for the build that we were going to project manage and build ourselves.
After plenty of research Cornwall Erecting Services were one of the companies I requested a quote for the steel frame. From that moment on they have been a pleasure to deal with. Quotes received promptly and when we started the build and met them to go through the drawings found they were easy to get along with and nothing was too much trouble. The steel frame was fabricated on time and to a high standard and they were out one evening to set out levels ready for erection first thing on Monday morning. From then on in it was just a matter of sit back and watch as quickly and efficiently we went from having a hole in the ground to having the skeleton of our house in 12 hours. Any small problems that we came across on the way were easily dealt with and the following day the frame was all levelled off and was ready for us to carry on with the build.
We would recommend using Cornwall Erecting Services and will be asking them to quote for our steel staircase and any other steel fabrication we may need in the future.
